Christmas in Mallorca begins on the 22nd of December, when the little ones of the family finish school and start the Christmas holidays. Their excitement for the presents, themed decorations and family get togethers is spread to the mums and dads, as this day is also when the Christmas Lottery comes out, a yearly draw in which millions of euros are shared amongst the lucky winners. Locals and visitors try their luck and start to daydream about investing in properties such as our luxury properties for sale in Mallorca.
Unlike many European countries, Spain celebrates Christmas Eve. During this special night on the 24th of December thousands of families come together around a table filled with foods such as cured meats, seafood and in Mallorca, meats like suckling pig, lamb or soup with stuffed pasta. Upon finishing the banquet, it’s time for an assortment of Christmas sweets, turrons and chocolates, which add the perfect finishing touch to the most incredible night of the year. Although it is a very family orientated evening, the younger ones take the opportunity to have a few drinks at the end of the dinner.
The day after Christmas Eve, the 25th of December, is Christmas Day. The most important day of the festive period! In Spain it’s common to take a walk in the morning and finish any errands and at lunch time, come back together with family to make the most of the left-over food from the night before. Often these leftovers are used to make Christmas soup, with the seafood stock from the day before, or cannelloni filled with meat. Christmas day is a public holiday in Spain, meaning that there is an even bigger holiday atmosphere.
The 26th of December is, without a doubt, one of the most special days of Christmas in Mallorca. It is Saint Stevens Day, a day celebrated in the Mediterranean part of Spain which is considered as the second day of Christmas. It is also a public holiday, on the island, in which the Mallorcan people make the most of to make plans with partners, friends and family in a more relaxed manner. Following this day, it is the official countdown to New Year.
