Christmas is an international holiday loved by all. Emotions and nostalgia run high during these few days. Tables fill with food and we start to pile on the layers to battle the cold weather, although in this instance it’s not as severe in Mallorca, given that it has a pleasant all year round climate. The islands towns present an array of local Christmas markets, which offer a variety of Christmas decorations, figures and moss to make the nativity scene or traditional instruments such as the zambomba.
Another of the unmissable performances during Christmas in Mallorca is the singing of the Sibil·la. A dramatized hymn portrayed by a female character dressed in a historic robe with a sword in hand which declares the apocalypse. This performance dates back to the middle ages and is carried out just before the Misa de Gallo (type of mass), which begins Christmas Day in the churches across the island of Mallorca. After hundreds of years of history, the singing of the Sibil·la in Mallorca was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on the 16th of November in 2010.
It reaches that time when you realise December has flown bye. It’s time to say goodbye to a year filled with completed resolutions and unfinished tasks. But a year in which we have learned a lot and welcome in another 365 days of challenges. In Mallorca, much like in the rest of Spain, New Year’s Eve is celebrated in specific ways. At home with all the family or in the main squares of each town, Mallorcans eat one grape every second as they reach midnight. These exact 12 seconds are accompanied by 12 bell chimes. Each resident that celebrates the New Year has 12 grapes ready in hand to be devoured. It is said that the grapes are for good luck and that they guarantee a prosperous year full of success.
Another characteristic which separates the Mallorcans from other Spanish people is that, as a symbol of good luck, they wear red underwear. An unusual tradition right?
